Interstellar Review - Udvar Hazy IMAX review

Saw interstellar tonight at the Udvar Hazy 70mm Imax near Dulles.

With the exception of two conversations in the film that go on just a bit too long; like 28 seconds too long, I loved it. This movie was made for the big screen. If you see it, it must be on a proper IMAX. It's loud, visual and expertly crafted. Don't let stupid people spoil this film for you. Go see it yourself. Great marketing has allowed this film to maintain it's core story without being spoiled, don't let some fucking asshole on facebook or twitter take that away from you.

Also the Udvar Hazy has the actual ship they used for filming on display and an Oculus Rift experience that mimic's the movie experience.

maximo riera - the Octopus Chair

spanish artist maximo riera has designed 'octopus chair', a limited edition piece that is part of a larger collection entitled 'animal chairs'. the series consists of more than fifteen different works where the marriage between furniture and animal is the main component.

choosing the chair based on its banality in our everyday lives, the series looks to bring life to the basic function of the object, making it more present while creating a stronger connection between the spectator, the chair and its environment.

requiring a team of over thirty professionals and four different companies, the chair was produced using a CNC milling machine. mechanized sculpting tools then produced a series of forms cut from foam blocks.

each part was assembled, glued, sanded and painted by hand to create an object that transmits a dynamic sense of movement.

Iron Man 2: Super awesome radical cool image of hellyeahs

my stupid blog/site/link dump was pretty much made because I wanted to post some images and videos about APB and Iron Man. So far the only one that delivered on my personal hype was Iron Man. Great fucking movie. Now the sequel is about to gear up for its media-internet-twitter-stupidtube onslaught and it begins with this sweetness image of Iron Man and War Machine.

The Prisoner (2009) - Comic Con Footage

In November, AMC will present The Prisoner miniseries, a reinterpretation of the British 1960s cult hit series starring and co-created by Patrick McGoohan.

The Premise : A man, known as "Six," finds himself inexplicably trapped in "The Village" with no memory of how he arrived. As he explores his environment, he discovers that his fellow inhabitants are identified by number instead of name, have no memory of any prior existence, and are under constant surveillance. Not knowing whom to trust, Six is driven by the need to discover the truth behind The Village, the reason for his being there, and most importantly -- how he can escape.

china celebrates by burning down the Mandarin

Ain't no party like a CCTV party, cause a CCTV party don't stop.....until it's burned down the Beijing Mandarin Hotel due to illegal fireworks. So many humorous observations can be made from this disastrous exhibit of a Chinese Party faux pas but I'll just look at the images and laugh.

Here's the quaint and party approved statement Mandarin issued:

“Beijing Fire Control Bureau says CCTV staff responsible for the construction of the new TV complex, hired staff to ignite large festive firecrackers outside the building, and caused the fire. The move did not receive approval from related authorities. The fire has caused severe damage. CCTV sincerely apologizes for the damage that the fire caused, and the inconvenience it has brought to the public.”

this is really impressive. David Chavez (his website) is a designer who just won a Spark Award (Spark's website) for his brilliant Braille watch design dubbed Haptica which displays a real-time readout in Braille using a military time format. It's a little surprising that no one had thought of this before.

Denton Corker Marshall Win Bridge Design Competition in Auckland

Architects Denton Corker Marshall, working in collaboration with engineers Hyder Consulting and Kenneth Grubb Associates, have won the international design competition for the Te Wero Bridge in Auckland, New Zealand. It seems a bit of a stretch to call a bridge stunning but this design most definitely fits the bill. Really quite amazing.

The NZ$50 million bridge will link the city’s CBD with Wynyard Quarter – an industrial area of Auckland’s waterfront that will be transformed over the next 25 years. Intended for public transport/cycle/pedestrian use, the Te Wero Bridge is a twin leaf bascule aluminum bridge with a vertical tower/mast of 60m.

The deck is split longitudinally into two separate components: the south leaf, longer and broader than the north, carries the two road lanes; the north leaf provides a 6m wide pedestrian/cycle path. The bridge will have an opening span of 40 metres to enable large boats to access Viaduct Harbour.

As the bridge opens, the two leaves separate coming to rest in a ‘V’ configuration with the decks angled obliquely to the mast and each other. The aerodynamic silhouette of the leaves suggest the modern sails of contemporary racing yachts.

Describing the design, Director Neil Bourne commented, “At rest, the striking mast stands sentinel in the heart of the harbour. In motion, the blades rise, split and then separate, twisting so edge becomes face. Upright, the three elements settle into a dynamic, yet elegant, composition.”

Professor John Hunt, Professor of Architecture at the University of Auckland and Chair of the Judging Panel said, “The judging panel agreed that this striking submission stood out from others in respect of its high level of design innovation and the unique way the twin leaves open.”

Key design features

• responds to its harbour context and distant views with large-scale distinctive cultural form and elegant profile
• vertical tower rises above yacht masts and creates a permanent gateway feature to mark crossing point regardless of whether the bridge is open or closed
• deck splits in two as it rises, with the leaves sweeping apart to come to rest in a V configuration
• the longer, broader south leaf carries the two passenger transport lanes while the north leaf is exclusively for pedestrians and cycles
• the three primary elements of differing length and width form an asymmetric composition. When viewed from different angles, they create infinite combinations of juxtapositions as the bridge leaves move towards the mast.
  

Construction features

• lightweight deck and counterweight arrangement result in very low energy use
• deck can be fabricated using local boat building expertise
• material selection gives excellent durability and low maintenance regime.
