Design Miami 2009
Celebrating its fifth year, a record-breaking 23,000 people visited Design Miami this year. The event is a showcase for the world's best limited-edition design. Curators, collectors, gallerists and press descend on Miami's historical design district to take in the shows, shops and exhibitions. Monocle reports from the Sunshine State and explores how the world of design art is maturing.
Design Miami/ is the global forum that brings together the most influential dealers, collectors, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. Inspired by the galvanizing effect of Art Basel Miami Beach, the founders of Design Miami/ set out to create a design fair unlike any other that came before.
They envisioned a new commercial and cultural forum that would capture the thriving general interest in design and elevate appreciation for limited-edition, experimental and historically significant design work, presented within an energetic, visually striking environment. No other design fair had ever attempted such a feat. From its inception, Design Miami/ was intended to be more than just a marketplace for high-end design. Two unique shows are held each year: Design Miami/, every December in Miami, and Design Miami/ Basel every June in Basel, Switzerland.

Bentley and Zai launch Supersport skis
Swiss firm Zai makes high-zoot skis. When the company teamed up with Bentley, the result was an even higher-zoot ski kit called Zai Supersports, composed of handmade skis and poles, and a ski bag.
The skis themselves feature a special carbon fiber material called "Zaiìra" on top, with a natural rubber core, chromium-steel-infused carbon fiber for the twisty bits, and Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites to round out your lust for exotic materials. The poles use the ExoGrid tech usually associated with the world of golf clubs.
There will only be 250 pairs made, and will sport a $9,800 purchase price. Get all the facts in the press release here, and a few more high-res pictures below.

Hugo Chavez is shooting the clouds
CARACAS, Venezuela - Hugo Chavez says he is starting to "bombard" clouds now that Cuba has provided Venezuela with cloud-seeding help in an effort to produce rain and alleviate the effects of a severe drought. The Venezuelan president said Saturday night that specialized equipment, sent by Fidel Castro and Cuban President Raul Castro, is starting to be used to seed clouds from planes.
"We're bombarding clouds," Chavez said during a televised speech. "We have some planes there, and some equipment that Fidel and Raul sent us."
‘I’ll hurl a lightning bolt at it’
Chavez is trying to squeeze more rain from the clouds as his country heads into its dry season amid a drought that has put reservoirs at their lowest levels in decades. The lack of water behind hydroelectric dams that supply most of Venezuela's electricity is threatening to worsen blackouts that have already become an emerging political liability.Chavez suggested he wants to witness the cloud-seeding effort, saying: "Any cloud that comes in my way, I'll hurl a lightning bolt at it. Tonight I'm going out to bombard."
Cloud-seeding has been tried in various countries — including China, Australia and parts of the United States — in attempts to draw more moisture from storms, usually by releasing silver iodide particles into clouds. Chavez did not say what method Venezuela is using.
Controversial efforts
Such efforts to modify the weather are controversial, and critics question the effectiveness under many circumstances. But cloud-seeding is viewed as an option in some areas.
the rest of the story that you don't really need to read can be found here msnbc link. Chavez's situation could be chalked up to poor planning and the inability to deal with problems using even remotely realistic solutions.

HBO's The Cube comes to dc
The Office of Motion Picture and Television Development and HBO are bringing ‘The Cube’ to the District this weekend. ‘The Cube,’ a 16 foot x 16 foot, four-sided video display, is a unique, new storytelling device that offers four different perspectives on the same scene simultaneously.
‘The Cube’ features two films, each two minutes and each played twice successively, on a rotating basis. In telling the same story from four distinct points of view, each side of the cube stands alone as an engaging film, and as one piece of a larger puzzle. As viewers move around the cube, they watch the story unfold from different perspectives, forming different perceptions, and often misperceptions, of the characters and plot. Only by watching the story unfold from multiple sides of the cube can one begin to see the bigger picture.
'The Cube' will be installed Thursday, October 8, at the plaza on the corner of Columbia Road, NW and Adams Mill Road, NW in Adams Morgan, and will operate Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 8 pm to 2 am.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact The Office of Motion Picture and Television Development at (202) 727-6608 or visit HBOimagine.com.
